Field Education

CMU has a strong history of work-integrated learning, a requirement of all students. Field education is understood to be the signature pedagogy of social work programs. It is the place where students can implement what's been learned in the classroom and grow in their identity as a professional social worker. Students are supported in this work by agency field instructors and faculty field liaisons. A field seminar course creates an opportunity for students to learn from each other and to help make sense of their experiences and integrate the theoretical and the practical knowledge.
Social work students complete their field placements in year three (first placement) and year four (second placement) of their studies. In these placements, they will complete over 700 hours of practice experience in diverse settings and with a variety of people such as children, families, newcomers, those with disabilities, those affected by substance use, those involved in the justice system, those with health or mental health difficulties, older adults, and many more.
Reinforcing the CMU ethos of social justice and community, all first-placement students are placed in settings that allow them to develop an understanding of the experiences of those who are marginalized and that offer opportunities to build community and advocate for justice. Second placements focus on case management and direct practice skills with individuals and families.
Strong field partnerships are vital to the success of our social work program. We value our relationships and work hard to support the students and the field instructors who are critical in the building of strong, compassionate, and ethical social workers.
If you are interested in becoming a partner agency and providing a practicum experience for a student, please contact the Field Education Coordinator.
"CMU educates the 'whole person'. Whole person work—understanding the importance of not just physical and mental dimensions but the spiritual as well—is central to social work practice. CMU will graduate social workers who get this and as a result will go on to make a huge contribution in the community."
