Major in Mathematics within the 4-year Bachelor of Science
The four-year Bachelor of Science with a major in Mathematics provides students with a breadth and depth of knowledge in mathematics. The CMU mathematics major is distinctive in that it also includes courses in chemistry, physics, and biology. A degree in Mathematics provides a solid foundation in analytical reasoning and problem solving. These are valuable skills for any area of employment or vocation, but especially so in science, engineering, computer programming, finance, and research. A Mathematics major is also an excellent stepping stone into professional programs in health or education.
Major in Mathematics within the 3-year Bachelor of Science
The three-year Bachelor of Science with a major in Mathematics provides students with a breadth and depth of knowledge in mathematics. Major in Mathematics within the 4-year Bachelor of Arts
A four-year major will give the added advantage of at least 6 more courses in the area of Mathematics and the opportunity to take more upper level theoretical mathematics including Chaos Theory. More general elective space means that the students can readily include a minor in a second field of interest. Furthermore, the four-year major in Mathematics can provide the basis from which to apply for admission to M.A. programs in Mathematics. The four-year degree is becoming the standard undergraduate expectation across North America.
Applied Mathematics Concentration in the Arts & Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
This highly flexible major allows students to design a program based on a creative combination of science and arts. Students acquire technical, analytical, and communication skills necessary for success in a broad range of fields. The Applied Mathematics concentration is a strong option for students interested in computer science, engineering, or finance. Students choose a second concentration in the arts, such as business or philosophy, to complement applied mathematics.
Mathematics Concentration in the Arts and Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
The Mathematics concentration is a strong option for students interested in education, research, or engineering. The requirements for this concentration are identical to those prescribed for a three-year major in Mathematics, except for 6 credit hours of additional electives. Students choose a second concentration in the arts, such as English or History, to complement mathematics.
Minor in Mathematics within the Bachelor of Arts
The minor requires 18 credit hours and can fit alongside a major in any field, whether in the three-year or the four-year Bachelor of Arts. Because mathematics is foundational to so much of our science and technology, math literacy is a crucial part of understanding the world. Students will develop reasoning and problem solving skills that complement any other disciplinary field. While math is indispensable in Science, it is no less valuable in English, Psychology, Business, Philosophy, Theology, etc.
