Biology Concentration in the Arts and Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
The biology concentration provides a solid foundation for students interested in the function, interactions and characteristics of living organisms. This concentration is similar to the biochemistry concentration, but with greater emphasis on function and diversity at the organismal level. Students majoring in Arts and Sciences will also choose a second concentration in the arts to complement and enrich their study of biology, such as English, psychology, peace and conflict transformation studies (PACTS), or philosophy.
Biochemistry Concentration in the Arts and Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
The biochemistry concentration is a strong option for students interested in health care professions. The concentration includes all science courses that are required to apply for programs in medicine, veterinary studies, dentistry, and pharmacology. Students majoring in Arts and Sciences will also choose a second concentration in the arts to complement and enrich their study of biochemistry, such as psychology, international development studies, or biblical and theological studies.
Applied Mathematics Concentration in the Arts & Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
The Applied Mathematics concentration is a strong option for students interested in computer science, engineering, or finance. A strong base in mathematics complemented by physics ensures students gain analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Students choose a second concentration in the arts, such as business or philosophy, to complement applied mathematics.
Ecology Concentration in the Arts and Science Major within the Bachelor of Arts
The ecology concentration is an option for students particularly interested in the interactions between living organisms and their environments at the population and community levels. The concentration provides students with a foundation in organismal biology, ecological theory, applied ecology, and both field and statistical research methods. Students majoring in Arts and Sciences will also choose a second concentration in the arts to complement and enrich their study in ecology.
Biology Minor within the Bachelor of Arts
The biology minor requires 18 credit hours of study, covering a breadth of sub-disciplines in the life sciences. It can be combined with a major in any BA field, whether in the three-year or the four-year Bachelor of Arts. Interesting connections between biology and many fields of study (e.g. philosophy, theology, psychology, English, or music, among others) make this minor a valuable complement to any major.
Biochemistry Minor within the Bachelor of Arts
The minor requires 36 credit hours, as competency in biochemistry requires study in a number of scientific disciplines, including math/physics along with biology and chemistry. With some care in course selection, this minor can be combined with a major in any BA field, whether in the three-year or the four-year Bachelor of Arts. The Biochemistry minor is a strong option for students in any program who interested in health care professions, as it includes all the science courses that are required to apply for programs in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacology.
Applied Mathematics Minor within the Bachelor of Arts
The minor requires 36 credit hours and can fit alongside a major in any field, whether in the three-year or the four-year Bachelor of Arts. Because mathematics is foundational to so much of our science and technology, math literacy is a crucial part of understanding the world. Students will develop reasoning and problem solving skills that complement any other disciplinary field. While math is indispensable in Science, it is no less valuable in English, Psychology, Business, Philosophy, Theology, etc.
