Lab Steward

Full-time at 1.0 FTE, One-Year Term with Benefits from Oct. 7, 2024 – Oct. 31, 2025

Canadian Mennonite University invites applications for a one-year term position as a Lab Steward. The successful candidate will work with faculty to support a growing undergraduate science program, which is an integral part of all our undergraduate degree paths. We are seeking an individual who loves laboratory work, collaborates effectively and enthusiastically with students and colleagues, and actively pursues opportunities to develop and refine their skills.

The successful candidate will have a thorough grounding in biological and chemical laboratory techniques and will take on the following duties (we will actively support training opportunities in areas where the candidate has less experience, as required):

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Administrative

  • Manage lab budget, ordering laboratory equipment and supplies, as required.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Updating and maintaining inventories of materials and chemicals.
  • Facilitating compliance with biological and chemical safety and hazardous materials regulations and standards.
  • Supervising undergraduate lab assistant.

Laboratory Preparation

  • Preparation of equipment, media, and solutions in advance of laboratory classes.
  • Overseeing proper use and readiness of laboratory facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A master’s degree in a related field (biological science or bio/organic chemistry) is preferred; a combination of education and substantial laboratory experience may be considered. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment. Experience in laboratory management, including budgeting and inventory control, will be considered an asset.
