Job Purpose
As CMU’s graduate programs grow, we want to continue to build connections among our graduate student community, through grad student events, such as orientation, a year-end event and weekly graduate student coffee breaks. The Grad Student Assistant’s work in planning and hosting these events and maintaining the grad studies room is key to creating inviting spaces for community connections.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate Grad student social events
- The Assistant will work with the Graduate Student Council to plan and promote regular events (in-person coffee break, zoom lunch...) for graduate students, in coordination with the Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies. The Assistant will be responsible to help to set-up for in-person events and to help clean up after in-person social events.
- The Assistant will serve as host for the social events each week and will work to create and warm inviting space and to include all grad students who attend.

Job Purpose
The presence of media studios and recording field equipment at CMU represents many exciting opportunities for Communications and Media students. These production spaces are intended to support many parts of the CMU community and requires ongoing administrative and maintenance support. The Comm/Media Assistant position provides an excellent skills development experience while at the same time providing the needed support to maintain and manage the studios and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field Equipment/Studios Orientation and Management
- The Assistant facilitates check-out/sign-in processes with library staff for all portable audio and video equipment and regularly checks the working condition of all equipment. The Assistant also checks equipment in the studios and flags any operational concerns or needs. The Assistant will participate in managing hardware and software in the studios and CMU computer labs in consultation with Comm/Media faculty and CMU’s IT department.
- A significant role in managing these resources is the delivery of orientation sessions at the beginning of each term. All students enrolled in a course that uses field equipment and/or media studios are required to attend a 30-minute orientation that explains usage responsibilities and procedures.
Studios Scheduling
- Projects from various courses and departments will be requiring time in the media studios. These activities may involve students, student volunteers, sessional instructors, and regular faculty and staff. The Assistant will serve as the contact person for studio scheduling and will prioritize usage in consultation with Communications/Media faculty. The Assistant will provide administrative support to set up student accounts on studio computers as needed.
Guidelines and Policy Development
- The Assistant participates in formulating strategy, guidelines and policy for field equipment and media studio use. This is important work that helps to build an appropriate infrastructure for program delivery.
Peer Mentoring
- The Assistant will be available to students working on projects as a peer mentor for up to 2 hours/week. An appointment system will be established through which students can sign-up for assistance. Peer mentoring is offered on the basis of the Assistant’s skills and experience.
Production Assistance
- The Assistant may be asked to assist in various creative production projects on behalf of CMU as time permits and as needs arise. Decisions about production involvement will be made on a case by case basis for faculty and staff-approved CMU projects.

The North Reception desk provides customer service to people with general inquiries in person, over the phone, and through email. Additionally, this is the primary location where mail is received and distributed. The North Reception Assistant covers various shifts at the desk to ensure that all inquiries are responded to in a timely manner.

Essentially, each Court Assistant is positioned on opposite sides of the court, away from any chance of interfering with play. The court assistance work together to ensure that at the conclusion of every point, the next server is provided with a new ball promptly and the ball used on the previous point is collected.
