Assiniboine Castle Reception Assistant

Job Purpose
The Assiniboine Castle Reception desk provides customer service to people with general inquiries in person, over the phone, and through email. Additionally, this is the primary location where mail is received and distributed. The Castle Reception Assistant covers various shifts at the desk to ensure that all inquiries are responded to in a timely manner.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Respond to calls that come to the main CMU phone line, providing answers or transferring the call to the appropriate person
- Respond to voicemails in a timely manner
- Assist those who come with questions to the reception desk, including giving directions, handing out waivers, using the copy machine, and releasing items for pickup
- Deal with emails that come to the CMU info email account, replying, forwarding, or deleting as necessary
- Receive mail deliveries from couriers and ensure that mail reaches its final destination
- Sort inter-departmental mail for mailboxes on North
- Prepare outgoing mail and parcels for pickup
- Receive and record payments for personal postage and personal print jobs
- Serve as a contact point should an emergency arise in the Assiniboine Castle, responding according to emergency protocols

Grad Studies Assistant

Job Purpose
As CMU’s graduate programs grow, we want to continue to build connections among our graduate student community and to ensure that students are well-supported as they begin their studies and move through their academic journey at CMU. The Grad Student Assistant’s work in connecting with students, supporting grad student community life and assisting with administrative tasks is key to meeting these goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Connect with Graduate Students
- The Assistant will connect with incoming students in the as they prepare to being their studies, answering logistical questions, providing a student perspective, and directing the student to CMU staff and faculty for support and information as appropriate.
- As International Grad Students arrive in Canada, the Assistant will check in with them and, as needed, will arrange to meet with them to help them with logistics related to settling in (initial shopping, SIN, bank account, etc.)
- From time to time, the Assistant may be asked to connect with current students (email, coffee...) when the student is struggling and would benefit from support and connection with another student.
- Coordinate Grad student social events
- The Assistant will work with the Graduate Student Council to plan and promote regular social events for graduate students, in coordination with the Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies. The Assistant will be responsible to help to set-up for in-person events and to help clean up after in-person social events.
- The Assistant will promote grad student events through posters, and the Grad Student group in Populi.
- As opportunity permits, the Assistant will encourage participants from all grad programs to attend social events and to use the Grad Studies Lounge.
- Support the work of the Graduate Student Council
- The Assistant will attend Graduate Student Council meetings and will support the Council in carrying out activities and other plans.

Media Lab Assistant

Job Purpose
The presence of media studios and recording field equipment at CMU represents many exciting opportunities for Communications and Media students. These production spaces are intended to support many parts of the CMU community and requires ongoing administrative and maintenance support. The Comm/Media Assistant position provides an excellent skills development experience while at the same time providing the needed support to maintain and manage the studios and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field Equipment/Studios Orientation and Management
- The Assistant facilitates check-out/sign-in processes with library staff for all portable audio and video equipment and regularly checks the working condition of all equipment. The Assistant also checks equipment in the studios and flags any operational concerns or needs. The Assistant will participate in managing hardware and software in the studios and CMU computer labs in consultation with Comm/Media faculty and CMU’s IT department.
- A significant role in managing these resources is the delivery of orientation sessions at the beginning of each term. All students enrolled in a course that uses field equipment and/or media studios are required to attend a 30-minute orientation that explains usage responsibilities and procedures.
Studios Scheduling
- Projects from various courses and departments will be requiring time in the media studios. These activities may involve students, student volunteers, sessional instructors, and regular faculty and staff. The Assistant will serve as the contact person for studio scheduling and will prioritize usage in consultation with Communications/Media faculty. The Assistant will provide administrative support to set up student accounts on studio computers as needed.
Guidelines and Policy Development
- The Assistant participates in formulating strategy, guidelines and policy for field equipment and media studio use. This is important work that helps to build an appropriate infrastructure for program delivery.
Peer Mentoring
- The Assistant will be available to students working on projects as a peer mentor for up to 2 hours/week. An appointment system will be established through which students can sign-up for assistance. Peer mentoring is offered on the basis of the Assistant’s skills and experience.
Production Assistance
- The Assistant may be asked to assist in various creative production projects on behalf of CMU as time permits and as needs arise. Decisions about production involvement will be made on a case by case basis for faculty and staff-approved CMU projects.

PH Dining Room Floor Cleaner

Job Purpose
The Student Cleaner is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the dining hall floor. This role is essential for ensuring that students, staff, faculty, and visitors have a welcoming and clean environment to share meals. The job is shared between two individuals, with each person working 3 times per week for 2 hours per shift.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Stack all chairs on top of tables
- Thoroughly sweep the floor, including underneath tables
- Use the floor scrubber to mop the floor.
- Wet mop the floor underneath tables.
- Work schedule is 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Monday to Friday.
- Maintain all cleaning equipment and notify supervisor of any issues.
- Both cleaners work together on Monday from 6:30pm- 8:30pm.
- On the days other than Monday, shifts are alternated between the two cleaners.
- Scheduling should be coordinated between the two cleaners in consultation with the supervisor.
- On Monday, all tables and chairs should be stacked and moved the side to thoroughly sweep, wash, and polish the floor. After cleaning, reset the tables and chairs.
- Honest and accurate in reporting hours worked.
- A meeting will be scheduled with the supervisor in January. This meeting must be attended to retain employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding job that will require the successful applicant to stack and move chairs and tables. Tables will be moved when there are two people on shift to avoid strain.
