Jaron and Abby Friesen are supporting CMU by buying a tile through the Come Together: Be a Bridge Builder campaign because the university is important to them. Jaron graduated from CMU in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in International Development Studies as well as Biblical & Theological Studies.
Originally from Waldheim, Sask., Jaron began working at CMU three months after he graduated. Today, he is the assistant director of hosting and facilities at the university.
“Initially I thought working at CMU would be a good transition from student life to getting a different job” outside of the university, Jaron says.
But three years later, he can’t imagine a better place to work.
“CMU really values the faith and family side of your life, and they give room for that and allow you to nurture it,” he says. “CMU offers a quality of work that I think very few institutions do.”
Jaron says that New Testament Economics, a class he took with Gordon Zerbe while studying at CMU, is one of the things that has influenced how he thinks about money.
The importance of being good stewards is something the church doesn’t stress enough, he adds. Christians might benefit from being more open about how they spend their money, so that they can hold each other accountable as well as encourage each other.
“If we don’t talk about it, then that can’t take place.”
Jaron and Abby have been married for two-and-a-half years, and have a one-year-old daughter, Elyse. They are participating in the Come Together: Be a Bridge Builder campaign by making small, monthly donations over the next three years.
Jaron says that sometimes it can be difficult to give, but for him and Abby, it’s important.
“It’s hard to always find the money to donate, but it’s just something that you need to trust in the Lord with.”
You can make a difference in the life of CMU for less than $14 a month. Find out how you can become a Bridge Builder and support CMU’s new Library, Learning Commons and Bridge by going here and clicking on "Alumni: Buy a Tile."
