Athletics plays an important role for many people who study at CMU, whether it's competing on one of the university's basketball, volleyball or soccer teams, sitting in the stands cheering on those teams, or playing pick-up hockey on the ice rink on south campus.
So it's no surprise that the schedule for Fall Festival 2013 includes two basketball games. The women's and men's teams will face off against the Providence University College Freemen on Friday, Sept. 27.
"It's important for Blazers Athletics to be featured as a place that alumni can connect with their sporting memories at CMU, whether as a fan or a player," says Russell Willms, director of athletics at CMU.
"In 2012, our volleyball programs were featured at Fall Festival, and we are excited to highlight our women's and men's basketball programs this year for the first time as a feature at this event."
The women's game starts at 6 PM in CMU's Loewen Athletic Centre, with the men's game following at 8 PM.
Willms says that the women's team features a large number of returning players, anchored by fourth-year forward Kathleen McCullough. After taking a year away from CMU, Hannah Prowse is also returning to the team this season.
On the men's side, fans should look forward to seeing four veteran players step into leadership roles this season—Adam Bergen (forward), Ryan Wiebe (forward), Parker Olfert (guard), and Luke Cassie (guard).
New recruits to look out for this year include Cassie Wiebe, who is expected to do a lot of running and scoring for the women's team. Wiebe averaged 22 points a game last year playing for her high school team, the Carman Collegiate Cougars. She also averaged 12 rebounds, nine steals and eight assists per game, which led to being selected as a 2013 Provincial All-Star.
Meanwhile, on the men's team, Sam Kinsley comes with high expectations. The 6'5" was a provincial team member and won numerous high school basketball awards for Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon.
Willms encourages alumni to check out the two exhibition games.
"We hope these games whet your appetite for the upcoming 2013-14 MCAC season."
