BMT or After-Degree Application & Audition Checklist
The following standards are taken from the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT) Recommended Competencies for music therapy students. Students applying for entry into CMU's Bachelor of Music Therapy degree program (normally occurs after Year 2 unless entering the After-Degree program) will be evaluated for their competencies in their major instrument as well as in piano, guitar, and voice.
1. Apply and be accepted at CMU as a general student
2. Submit application package prior to January 15
You must submit your music therapy program application form and all supporting documentation through your application portal by 5:00 PM on January 15, 2024. The required supporting documentation includes:
- A Brief Autobiography (2-4 pages) including a description of your family, cultural background, health, educational history as well as a history of challenges or difficulties you have experienced and how that information has influenced/shaped your desire to become a music therapist. Your capacity to be self-reflective and writing quality will be evaluated, not the content of life experiences.
- 2 Reference Letters – One reference letter should be from an academic professor or private instructor. The other reference letter should be from an employer or supervisor. Please enter the names and contact information of your referees in your application portal, and they will automatically be sent a link to upload their reference letters.
- Curriculum Vitae (Résumé) showcasing your experience with individuals with disabilities, educational, rehabilitation, recreation or clinical settings.
- Degree Plan outlining which courses you have completed and plan on taking each semester and an anticipated graduation date. (Not required for the After Degree program.)
3. January 30 – notification to successful applicants on their audition days/times
4. Audition requirements (early March)
- Students must submit a completed a Music Concentration Application Form at their music therapy audition.
5. Results will be shared no later than end of May
6. Successful applicants must submit their reply to offer form and non-refundable tuition deposit through their application portal by June 30.
