Government Student Aid
An application for student aid through your province is an application for three different types of funds:
- Canada Student Grants
- Provincial Student Bursaries
- Federal and Provincial Student Loans
The amount you can receive depends on several factors, including:
- your province or territory of residence
- your family income
- if you have dependents
- your tuition fees and living expenses
- if you have a disability
The amount you can receive in grants and loans is calculated when you apply with your province or territory.
To find out if you can receive Canada Student Grants or Loans, use the federal student aid estimator. Note that this estimator doesn't take into account the provincial and territorial student grants and loans.
Basic Government Student Aid Application Information
- You can begin applying on or after June 15 for the fall and winter semesters of the next academic year.
- A percentage course load calculation is needed for your student loan application. To calculate the percentage course load, divide your credit hours for the year by the number of credit hours you need to take each year to complete your degree. It looks like this:
- % Course Load for a Bachelor of Arts = credit hours for year /30
- % Course Load for Bachelor of Music = Credit hours for year /32.5
- % Course Load for of Music Therapy = Credit hours for year /33.25
- If you previously received student loan funds and will be in either part-time or full-time studies for the current academic year, make sure you contact the Student Financial Services Administrator to complete a confirm your enrolment with the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) and your province (if you province requires this). If this is not completed you will have to begin repaying your previous student loan(s).
- You will receive 60% or your funds in the fall semester and then 40% in the winter semester – budget accordingly.
Full-time Students
- You must maintain full-time status (above a 60% course load) per term in order to obtain and/or keep your loan in an interest free state.
Part-time Students
- Loans for part-time studies are available but are not interest-free.
CMU is recognized as a designated educational institution under the Canada Student Loan program.
