Sheila's primary areas of teaching and writing are Jesus and the Gospels. She is particularly interested in exploring who Jesus was "then" and what it means to follow him "now." Although her graduate work focussed on discipleship in the Gospel of Luke, recently she has done more writing on the Gospel of John. Her current research is leading her in a new direction; she is working on a commentary on the letter of James for the Believers Church Bible Commentary series.

Sheila teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Besides introductory Bible courses, she has taught courses such as Luke-Acts, Jesus in John, Who is Jesus?, Biblical Perspectives on Peace and Justice, and Biblical Greek. Sheila is a teacher who treasures her relationships with students and enjoys interacting with them outside of class as well as in. She is enthusiastic about making the Bible come alive for people, both in university as well as congregational settings.

Sheila has been teaching at CMU and before that at Canadian Mennonite Bible College since 1993. Prior to coming to CMBC/CMU she taught at Swift Current Bible Institute and Elim Bible Institute in Altona. Sheila completed a PhD in Biblical Studies at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA and earned an MDiv from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, a BA (History) from the University of Manitoba, and a BTh from CMBC.

Sheila grew up on a farm in southern Alberta and was nurtured into faith in the Coaldale Mennonite Church. She is currently a member at Charleswood Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, where she occasionally teaches adult education and preaches. She is married to Vern, and they have three wonderful young adult daughters, Megan, Rebecca, and Nicolien. When Sheila is not working, she finds joy in getting her hands dirty in the garden, running, making delectable desserts, reading novels, and spending time with family and friends.
