The CMU Research Ethics Board (REB) supports instructor-led (course-based) research assignments as a valuable way to create new knowledge for students and to practice research. The approval of instructor-led research respects the expertise of the instructor – the instructors are experts in their subject area, know their students, and understand the impact of research for students and the populations of interest.
After REB approval, instructors teach and monitor the principles of ethical research in their classrooms, and they approve student study designs and research instruments (e.g., consent forms, interview guides, questionnaires). After REB approval, the REB takes a supportive role for the instructor through the life of the assignment.
Please note: If students anticipate they may wish to use their data in a future project (e.g., honor's thesis), they need to contact the REB chairperson before collecting data for this assignment.
