About: Lending Policies

Passed by CMU Faculty Senate on December 5, 2001

Borrowers

Books, periodicals and most other library materials may be borrowed by all CMU faculty, staff, and students in good standing. Residents of Winnipeg and the surrounding communities are also invited to use the library, provided they adhere to library policies.

ALL CMU Library material MUST be checked out before leaving the library. Course reserve materials must also be signed out, whether the materials remain in the library or not.

Loan Periods

Items Period
Books, music scores 21 days
CDs, DVDs, videos, bound journals 7 days

Most reserve material signed out during a week day (Monday to Thursday) is due 24 hours after check-out. Other material may be used for only two hours at a time. If signed out on Friday or Saturday, the material is due early on the next working day. CDs on reserve may not be signed out until 7:00 PM. They are due by 10:00 AM the next working day.

Renewals

Patrons may renew borrowed items online, by telephone, by email or in person, within 10 days prior to the due date, provided that item has not been requested by another borrower. All subsequent renewals require presentation of the materials to be renewed at the library circulation desk.

Overdue Fines

The following charges for materials returned late will be applied:

Items Fines
Music scores, CDs, DVDs, videos $0.50 / item / day
Max: $15.00 / item
Recalled items $1.00 / item / day
Max: $15.00 / item
Media equipment $0.50 / item / hour
Reserve see below
For late reserve items, $0.50 per hour to a maximum of 10 hours ($5.00) per item for the first day will be charged. Borrowers will be asked to pay $5.00 per item, to a maximum of $25.00 per item for each additional day a borrowed reserve item is not returned.

Lost or Damaged Items

Lost or damaged items are the responsibility of the borrower. We discourage borrowers from lending library materials to friends, family, strangers, or pets. Borrowers will be invoiced the cost of repairing or replacing an item in addition to a $15 processing fee. Lost or damaged items no longer in print will be assessed a minimum fee of $50.00.

Any borrower who returns an item within 30 days of having paid the replacement costs may apply for a refund. The processing fee is not refundable.

Students are responsible for all media equipment they sign out. The expense of replacing or repairing damaged equipment will be borne by the student. For more information on signing out and taking responsibility for media equipment see the CMU Media Studios.

Payment

Payment of library fines and of lost or damaged items may be made by cash, cheque, debit, or credit card.

Privacy

Library patron records are considered confidential and will not be disclosed without permission of the patron.
