Mending with Tradition

Jessie Jannuska

Drawing inspiration from personal connections and role models, Jessie Jannuska explores themes of Indigenous female empowerment, provides commentary on Indigenous issues and perseverance through Indigenous spirituality, ceremony, and community.

This exhibition is connected to a graphic novel of the same themes and features a wide variety of mixed media works that includes a large moosehide painting as well as beadwork, drawing, collage, and more.

Artist Bio:

Jessie Jannuska (she/her) is a Winnipeg-based Indigenous visual artist and art workshop facilitator. She is mixed of Dakota, Ojibway, and settler ancestry and is a member of Canupawakpa Dakota Nation in Treaty 2. She graduated with a BFA with honors from Brandon University in 2018. Jannuska primarily works in mixed media, beadwork, acrylic, crankies, and murals. Her work explores her Indigenous culture through a cathartic lens by blending realism, contemporary beadwork style, and symbolism that represents her Indigenous spirituality.. Shealso teaches art workshops in beading, dreamcatchers, painting (step-by-step), mural work, sweetgrass baskets, and crankie-making to all ages.

      Jessie will be demonstrating her techniques for creating art - which explores her Indigenous culture through a cathartic lens by blending realism, contemporary beadwork style, and symbolism that represents her Indigenous spirituality. She hopes you will stop to chat about art!

  • Fundraiser Mixed Media Beading Workshop with Jessie Jannuska

    Gather to celebrate MHC Gallery with a unique, multi-media beading workshop led by Jessie Jannuska! Spaces are extremely limited for this special workshop, which offers detailed and hands-on instruction, along with everything you need to create your own mixed media beaded artwork. Jessie will also be available to answer questions via email in the weeks following the workshop, should you need additional support. Come early to enjoy the last day of Jessie's exhibition Mending with Tradition.

    This workshop is a fundraising event for MHC Gallery. $50 of each ticket purchased will be eligible for tax receipt (per Canadian Revenue Agency guidelines, material costs cannot be included in donation).
