CMU cares deeply about building a community focused on peace and justice—both in what we learn in the classroom and how we live every day. In about 500 words, respond to the following:
What do “peace” and “justice” mean to you? How do you hope to keep growing in these areas at CMU?
You might think about your family, school, friendships, community, or world events.
Share a personal story, or one from a movie, tv show, or book that has shaped how you understand peace and justice.
What kinds of classes, activities, conversations, or community work do you see yourself being part of that might contribute to a more peaceful and just campus community?
In responding to these questions, you may consider some of the above prompts. Don’t feel like you have to respond to all of these options. Pick and choose the one or two that seem important to you. Your voice matters and is important to us so be honest, and focus your real experiences.
At CMU, learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom—it also happens through real-life experiences, like jobs, living on campus, work integrated learning placements, and community projects. In about 500 words, respond to the following questions:
Think of a time when something you experienced in your own life helped you understand something you were learning in class or the other way around.
How did these experiences change or deepen your understanding? Looking ahead to your time at CMU, what kinds of experiences do you hope will shape your learning and your everyday life?
Use your own voice, be specific, and don’t be afraid to tell a story.
CMU is a place where people learn together by asking big questions about Christian faith, the world around us, and what it means to live well in it. People here come from many different cultures, backgrounds, and faiths or no faiths, or are just curious about life’s big questions. CMU wants everyone to be able to talk with each other openly and respectfully—even when they don’t agree. Respond in about 500 words, as you think about these questions :
What does “having conversations across differences” mean to you? Why do you think these kinds of diverse conversations are important? How do you imagine yourself taking part in this kind of diverse community at CMU? How could your participation in these conversations help bring hope to our world?
In responding to these questions, pick and choose the ones that are important to you. You don’t need to have all the answers—focus on being honest, thoughtful, and specific about your own experiences and hopes. You might think about your school, your community, your family, or even an example you’ve seen in a movie or tv show. Think about small or big ways that listening, learning, and speaking with others might make a difference.
Scholarship Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by February 28 to be eligible. The Scholarship Application is available to CMU applicants on their application portal.
