Preparing For A Career In Nursing
Download an information sheet,
A year of study at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) could prepare you to meet the entrance requirements for a baccalaureate program in nursing. This page explains what you must complete if you wish to continue studies at the University of Manitoba to earn the Bachelor of Nursing. If you intend to continue studies at some other university, similar possibilities exist. However, it is important that you inquire about admission and program requirements at the university you are considering and that you work with the assistant dean at CMU to construct a program of studies at CMU that will achieve your objectives.
If you intend to earn the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, you can begin with a year of studies at CMU and complete the degree program at the University of Manitoba without adding to the time it would take if you were to go directly to the University of Manitoba. This page presents both of the basic admission requirements and also explains what you must complete if you wish to move directly into the second year of the nursing program.
It will be necessary to take two courses from the University of Manitoba. They are highlighted below in UPPERCASE LETTERS. (These courses are normally offered by U of M at CMU, but require the student to register for them through U of M as a “visiting student.”)
Students must achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.50 with no grade lower than “C” to become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Nursing. However, admission is on a competitive basis, and normally students must earn a much higher average to compete successfully.
To become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, you must complete one of the following two options:Option # 1:
Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours including the following with a minimum grade of “C” and a GPA of at least 2.5:
- • Anatomy of the Human Body (3 cr. hrs.)
- • Physiology of the Human Body (3 cr. hrs.)
- • Essentials of Microbiology (3 cr. hrs.)
- • HUMAN GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT (3 cr. hrs.)
- • INTRODUCTION TO NURSING (3 cr. hrs.)
- • 6 cr. hrs. additional Science
- • 3 cr. hrs. Humanities
- • 6 cr. hrs. of Introductory Psychology, Sociology, or Anthropology
Option # 2:
- Students must complete at least 30 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5, including a course to meet the written English requirement, three credit hours of 100-level English (or English 40S from high school, 2 credits) and three credit hours of 100-level science (or Science 40S from high school). Students should be aware that to be admitted under option # 2, their GPA will need to be more competitive than under option # 1.
Example of a qualifying year at CMU:
First Term
- BTS1110 Introduction to Biblical Literature & Themes (meets humanities & written English requirement)
- BIOL1360 Anatomy & Lab
- PSYC1000 Intro to Psychology OR SOCI1000 Intro to Sociology
- BIOL1350 Microbiology
- NURS 1260 HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT (UofM course offered at the CMU campus)
Second Term
- BTS-2000 Introduction to Christianity or BTS-2550 History of Christianity
- BIOL1370 Physiology & Lab
- Introductory Psychology OR Sociology, continued
- Additional Science
- NURS 1280 INTRODUCTION TO NURSING (a UofM course offered at the CMU campus)
If you register at CMU according to this example, you would apply to the Faculty of Nursing under Option 2. You would qualify to move directly into the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing program if you completed one additional science course during the spring session.
