Pre-Professional - Medicine
One of the advantages of studying at CMU is having an opportunity to take courses that could prepare you for degree programs of professional faculties or schools at various universities. This way you can study Bible and theology and be part of a vibrant Christian community—while looking ahead to future studies in areas like law, education, medicine and others.

Preparing for a Career in Medicine

Completing a Bachelor of Arts at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) could prepare you to meet the entrance requirements for a graduate program in medicine. This page explains what you must do if you wish to continue studies at the University of Manitoba to earn the Doctor of Medicine. If you intend to continue studies at some other university, similar possibilities exist. However, it is important that you inquire about admission and program requirements at the university you are considering and that you work with the Coordinator of Student Advising at CMU to construct a program of studies at CMU that will achieve your objectives.

If you intend to earn the Doctor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, it is possible for you to complete a baccalaureate degree at CMU and to earn your Doctor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba without adding to the time it would take if you were to go directly to the University of Manitoba. It will be necessary to take some courses at the University of Manitoba or at the University of Winnipeg for your degree at CMU. Courses not currently available at CMU are highlighted in UPPERCASE LETTERS.

To become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, you must present a three- or four-year B.A. (or B.Sc.) with a minimum GPA of 3.6 that includes:
• 18 credit hours of Humanities and/or Social Sciences
• CHEM 2360 and 2370 BIOCHEMISTRY (6 cr. hrs.)

Since CHEM 2360 Biochemistry has prerequisites, you will need to take additional Science courses, namely CHEM 1010 &1020 and the introductory Biology courses (with labs). Furthermore, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), which each applicant must take, presupposes knowledge of Organic Chemistry and Physics. Though you are not required to take courses in these fields, you may choose to include them in preparation for the MCAT. You must write the MCAT no later than August of the year before the year in which you hope to be admitted.

Example of a three-year qualifying B.A. (General Studies) taken at CMU:

Year 1, Term 1

Year 1, Term 2

Year 2, Term 1

Year 2, Term 2

Write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) no later than August of this year to gain eligibility for admission to the Faculty of Medicine after your final year in the B.A. program.

Year 3, Term 1

Year 3, Term 2
